K/1's Apply Engineering to Create an Effective Windmill

Ms. Austen's homeroom fall STEM project, Catching the Wind, Designing Windmills, had the K/1 learners applying the Engineering Design Process to create an effective windmill.  The children began with examining materials best for catching wind.  Next, the children explored how many blades to use, as well as the best shape for their sails.  Finally, they experimented with the angle the blades should be turned to spin the fastest.  We tested our blades a number of times and re-designed when needed.  One challenge was to be able to lift a "bucket" full of connector cubes.  It was exciting to see the windmills working so well!
