NCS 4th and 5th graders Explore Architecture

Our 4th and 5th grade students are learning about architecture, math, science, and communities through our Terrace Town Unit.  They have been discussing the needs, wants, and services within communities.  They have had a visit from architect Arlen Kay who discussed the structure, function, and aesthetics of buildings in a community.  He discussed building zones and showed how science and math affect the architectural design of buildings, such as the strength that triangles add to the design of a bridge. He built a bridge between two tables using this concept and also built a freestanding arch that Mr. Lohr and the students got to walk under!

The students have also been exploring architecture with our new Keva planks (www.kevaplanks.com).  All NCS students are having similar opportunities using the Keva planks.

Soon, we will be having a City Planner from Verona come speak to all of the NCS classes.  Stay tuned!
