NCS 5th Graders Program Robots

5th graders at NCS have been busy programming the base chassis using ModKit Software.  The new radios we received from the VAEF grant allows the iPad to talk directly to the robot without a classroom computer.  This made programming very slick and easy.

The photos shown were a preliminary challenge:  move 2 blocks from the start to the finish line within 2 minutes. Robots needed to be instructed to move forward, pivot turn, and move forward.  It was not an easy task to get there!

Next week, students will simulate an autonomous robot that could be used in a hospital setting to move supplies from place to place.  Their AGV, Automated Guided Vehicle, will be programmed to move different colored blocks to different locations in a "hospital."  Green blocks represent surgical supplies and need to be moved to the green zone, blue blocks are medicines to the blue zones, and red blocks are items to be cleaned to the red zones.  Students will be awarded points based on how many blocks to the correct zones.  As you saw in the preliminary challenge, students can modify the base chassis to complete the challenge.  (design the robot however they would like)

Hope that gives you a good summary of where we are in the unit and where we are going!
